Alveo Sense™ Poultry Avian Influenza Test

Alveo Sense Poultry Avian Influenza Tests are two rapid, accurate, in-the-field multiplexed panels to test for all relevant strains of Avian Influenza Type A viruses, with differentiation of H5, H7, and H9 subtypes. Developed in partnership with x-Ovo and Royal GD, leaders in the poultry industry, this test can accurately detect the presence of virus in both cloacal and oropharyngeal samples from poultry with highly sensitive and specific test results in 45 minutes.

Additionally, the platform has the capability to wirelessly upload time-stamped geotagged results to a common portal, providing regulatory agencies with near real-time information on the spread of the virus.

Data collection for avian influenza is haphazard and tied to a limited number of central labs, which makes tracking the spread difficult, highlighting the need for innovative, rapid, on-site testing.

The Alveo Sense Poultry Avian Influenza Test Type A, H5 and H7 or H9 is a rapid molecular amplification test for the qualitative detection of Avian Influenza Type A viruses and differentiation of H5 and H7 RNA subtypes from oropharyngeal and cloacal samples from symptomatic and asymptomatic chickens. Positive or presumptive positive test results with the Alveo Sense Poultry Avian Influenza Test should be submitted to an authorized reference laboratory for confirmatory testing.

All results are delivered directly to the user via the Alveo Mobile application, Alveo Sense, and saved to Alveo’s secure, cloud-based system.

Alveo Sense Poultry Avian Influenza test is powered by our patented Nucleic Acid Amplification Technology with everything needed for the test included in the kit. No transportation or central lab needed.

The H5, H7 and H9 assays are complemented by a general Type A assay (matrix gene) for broad Avian Influenza detection to ensure greatest coverage. Minimal cross-reactivity between H5, H7 and H9 assays.

The Alveo Sense app is supported on iPhone iOS 15 and above and Android OS 13 and above. Certain features may be limited or unavailable on devices running iOS 14 and below and Android OS 12 and below. Compatibility with other devices or OS versions is not guaranteed. Bluetooth must be enabled to pair the analyzer.

For veterinary use only.

Frequently Asked Questions

In validation studies, Alveo Sense Poultry Avian Influenza Test showed ≥99% positive percent agreement (PPA) and ≥99% negative percent agreement (NPA) compared with a reference RT PCR assay across oropharyngeal and cloacal samples. Analytical sensitivity (limit of detection) was established at levels corresponding to approximately Ct 28–33 values on RT PCR, indicating detection of clinically relevant viral loads. Validation findings are published in a peer-reviewed journal. View the full publication here.

The entire workflow is guided step-by-step through the Alveo Sense mobile app. No laboratory setup, centrifuge, or technical background is required. Initial training typically takes less than an hour, including practicing the workflow and cartridge filling. Typically, if your team can collect swab samples, they can easily run the test.

Alveo Sense delivers a preliminary result to your smartphone within an hour of starting a test, enabling response preparation, and should be followed by confirmatory testing and any required actions under applicable local, state, national, and other jurisdictional regulations or authority guidance.

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest and stored in secure AWS cloud infrastructure. Access is controlled through authentication, authorization, and administrative safeguards design to protect electronic data from unauthorized access, alteration, or disclosure.

Under one hour. Once a sample is collected and loaded onto the cartridge, the assay runs for 45 minutes inside the Analyzer. Results are transmitted directly to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Yes. The Alveo Sense app includes an “offline mode” supporting up to 10 tests per paired Analyzer, with a maximum of 60 tests across six Analyzers simultaneously, and potentially more depending on your smartphone memory. Results are stored securely on the device and uploaded when internet connectivity or Wi-Fi is restored, making the system reliable for remote farm locations with limited or no mobile signal.

Yes. The system is designed to support testing across multiple barns or locations during a single farm visit. Up to six analyzers can be paired to one smartphone and operated simultaneously, allowing multiple samples to be processed in parallel while maintaining separate result reporting for each analyzer.

Yes. Storage recommendation for the test kit is 2-30 °C, and for the analyzer, 15-30 °C.

Yes, the Analyzer is about the size and weight of a Smartphone and can be used without a power outlet when charged.

Alveo Analyzer

The Alveo Analyzer is a standalone instrument that is capable of running Alveo Cartridges from the Alveo Test Kits. The Alveo Sense Cartridges include internal process controls to help ensure that tests are run properly and that test results are valid. Test results are displayed to the user (e.g. Positive, Negative, Invalid) on the screen of the user’s smartphone device, and are saved to the registered user’s Alveo Sense Account.

  • Portable and rechargeable
  • Smartphone app enabled
  • Results stored on a secured, cloud-based database

System Description

The Alveo System consists of the Alveo Analyzer, Alveo Sense Test Kits (test-specific kits) and Alveo SenseTM Mobile App (software) that must be installed on a compatible* smartphone device.

Intended Use

The Alveo Analyzer is an In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) instrument that accepts test-specific Alveo Sense Cartridges and executes nucleic acid amplification and detection of analytes according to assay definitions associated with the inserted Cartridge. The Alveo Analyzer is designed for use with Alveo’s Cartridges, allowing healthcare providers to run specific tests on the platform using pre-defined assays.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Alveo Analyzer is powered by a rechargeable battery and should be charged using the supplied USB cable and power adapters. A full charge from a depleted battery typically takes up to 4 hours. The device must have a sufficient battery (minimum ~34%) to start a test, and indicator lights will signal when charging is needed. For optimal use, keep the Analyzer plugged in during operation or between runs, especially when performing multiple tests.

A fully charged Analyzer can run approximately 4 - 6 tests under typical conditions. The system prevents starting a new test if battery levels are too low (below ~34%) to ensure that any test in progress can complete without interruption.

Yes, the Analyzer is designed to run tests while plugged in. In fact, keeping the device connected to power during operation or between runs is recommended to avoid interruptions due to low battery.

The Analyzer should be cleaned externally after use with approved disinfectants such as 70% isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide (3%), or diluted bleach. Detailed cleaning instructions can be found in the user manual.

The Analyzer is factory-calibrated and does not require routine user calibration. If performance issues occur, basic troubleshooting (such as restarting or re-pairing the device) is recommended, and additional support is available from Alveo customer support if needed.

The Analyzer is designed to work with smartphones running iOS 15+ or Android 13+ and requires Bluetooth connectivity. Tablets and unsupported operating systems may not function properly, as the system has only been validated for compatible mobile devices.
